Bring Your Floats to the pool Party, Friday, June 8, 7 – 10 pm
Church Youth Group Party, 5 – 8 pm:
Several member families have asked for and been granted permission to hold a special event for their church’s youth group at the V Oasis on Friday, June 8th. This youth group participates in in-town mission service and a number of member families are involved with the church. The event is scheduled from 5 pm to 8 pm and extra lifeguards have already been secured from Swim Atlanta. We will make every effort to minimize the disruption for members, including asking participants to not park in the Venetian parking lot.
40 Mile & Lap Swim Update
Our organizer of the 40 Mile Challenge and lover of all things Venetian has to offer, Maya Hahn, has submitted the following:
Many VPCA members feel that there are only two seasons each year: Venetian, and Waiting for Venetian. Well, it’s Venetian season now and the 40 Mile Swim Challenge is going full stroke. As of mid-May, ninety-five (95) members have signed up for the Challenge and many of them have completed their first few miles. With June, July, August, and September ahead of us, there’s plenty of time to complete your 40 miles if you haven’t yet signed up. Blank recording sheets are in the front pocket of the 40 Mile Challenge Record book at the front desk. Just fill one out and jump in!
Swimming is good for your heart and lungs and the density of water allows you to exercise without putting pressure on your joints. And name one other exercise you can do lying down and have the sweat wash away immediately. Furthermore, swimming is an exercise that knows no age boundaries. Our pool’s oldest member, in his 90’s, still swims laps regularly, and I see plenty of kids swimming in the lap lanes as well.
Lap swimmers love the long lanes at Venetian because they allow us to swim without the interruption of turning, establishing a rhythm that many find meditative. Personally, I find the 50 yard laps easier and faster to swim in than a 25 yard or meter lanes like the YMCA has. And, looking up at the sky and the trees is a treat found nowhere else in Atlanta.
But, “lap swimming is boring”, you say. Not so if you use the quiet time to meditate. Or, pop in some earplugs and listen to music on a waterproof ipod or the new MP3 player, SYRYN, from Underwateraudio.com. Or, download a podcast or a recorded book. You’ll be surprised how quickly the laps go by. This year, www.underwateraudio.com is offering Venetian members a 10% discount on any of their products. I’ve been buying their products for the past several years.
“I lose track of the laps I’ve swum”, you say. I keep track of the number of laps I’ve swum by doing sets of strokes—2 sets of 4 plus one equal a half mile; I’ve seen other members use lap counters that they wear on a finger, like a ring. One member has created a counter that he wears as a bracelet. Mary Dabbs once told me she used to use acorns as counters. Whatever gets you from one end of the pool to the other rules.

In any event, let’s enjoy the summer. Whether you sign up for the 40 Mile Swim Challenge or not—and there are plenty of Venetian members who swim laps but don’t enter the challenge—we are fortunate to have this beautiful, large pool for everyone to enjoy the water activity of his or her choice. And, remember to thank the hardworking lifeguards who protect us on land and in the water and keep our pool sparkling. Rock your swim!

Here is how it works:
- Put your long lengths in cell A18 or your long laps in cell A21 and your lengths to go, miles completed, and miles to go will be calculated in cells B18, C18, and D18; your laps to go, miles completed, and miles to go will be calculated in cells B21, C21, and D21.
- If you swim any short lengths or laps, do the same in cells A24, or A27.
